For a less than b, b less than c and c less than 0, what is the value of a+b / b+c ?
a) greater than 1
b) less than 1
c) greater than 0 but less than 1
d) greater than a/c
e) greater than -1
Question 2: 1.If the operation * is one of the four Arithmatic operation addition,Subtraction,Multiplication and division. Is (6*2)*4=6*(2*4)

Q1. It should be (a).greater than 1.
ReplyDeleteQ2. Should be C.
I had posted another note on your day 4 question about |x| and |y|. If you have some insight please share.
IMO, Q1. A, Q2. A.
ReplyDeleteQ2. A) implies '+' or 'x' is possible, so (6+2)+4=6+(2+4)=12 or (6x2)x4=6x(2x4)=48. Therefore, A) is sufficient.
B) implies 'x' or '/' is possible. Clearly '/' does not work in this case. Therefore, B) is insufficient.
Solution to Question 1:
ReplyDeleteFor a less than b, b less than c and c less than 0, what is the value of a+b / b+c ?
a) greater than 1
b) less than 1
c) greater than 0 but less than 1
d) greater than a/c
e) greater than -1
Since the numbers are negative a+b/b+c can be written as -(a+b)/-(b+c).
These kind of problems can be best solved by substituting numbers. Hence assume a random value say a=-4, b=-3 and c=-2. Now check for yourself
Answer is A

solution to Question 1 has been rightly explained by Yari in comment#2.
ReplyDeleteLet me know if somebody needs further explanation.

I will look into the post and will answer you with the best I can.

question 1. Go with Yari's comments.
ReplyDeleteQuestion 2. A alone is sufficient.
But the question says that only one of the arithmetic operation is possible. Should the answer to Q2 be (B). Taking the operations presented in the question itself, we can see that '/' is out since it doesn't satisfy. Statement (1) gives us, as correctly pointed out, '+' and '*'. so not sufficient. But statement (2) gives us '/' and '*', out of which only '*' is valid. Please comment.

ReplyDeleteThe question is whether (6*2)*4=6*(2*4)
We are not bothered about the number of possible operators that can satisfy any of the statements. Since from statement 1 no matter what the operator is, the Left hand side = Right hand side. Hence we can say yes
(6*2)*4=6*(2*4)
Let me know if you have any further queries

Point noted.. Thanks for the comprehensive explanation..
